Struck in high relief
Lot 531
KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Stater (Gold, 18 mm, 8.54 g, 12 h), Babylon (?). Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet decorated with coiled serpent. Rev. BAΣIΛΕΩΣ - [AΛE]ΞANΔΡ[OΥ] Nike standing front, head to left, with her wings spread, holding laurel wreath in her right hand and stylis in her left; to right, uncertain control. Struck in high relief. The reverse a bit weak, otherwise, good very fine.

Unfortunately, the control to the right of the reverse on this lovely stater is illegible. Our tentative attribution to Babylon is based on the style of the Athena, whose long and elaborate locks clearly mark it as an eastern issue
